SIUE Overpowers Chicago State

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – SIUE men's tennis improved to 2-0 in the spring season with a 6-1 triumph over Chicago State at the Edwardsville YMCA Meyer Center.

The Cougars won five straight sets matches in singles led by Jacob Perkins at No. 4 singles. He defeated Luis Ulloa 6-0, 6-0.

"We played really well as a team tonight," said SIUE Head Coach Jason Coomer. "I;'m very happy with the outcome."

Chicago State fell to 1-4 overall.

SIUE got off to a strong start with the double point. At No. 2 doubles, SIUE's Stephen Washuta and Nicolas Vincent defeated Ullia and Rohan Wattley 6-3. SIUE's Patrick Gaffigan and Matthew Hutchinson collected the win at No. 3 doubles with a 6-2 victory over Mario Noboa and Rashley Yeremia.

The Cougars' rout continued at No. 1 singles as Vincent captured a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Noboa. Tristan Houle downed Christian Gonzalez 6-4, 6-0 at No. 3 singles. Hutchinson downed Rashley Yeremia 6-3, 6-2 at No. 5 singles. At No. 6 singles, Washuta topped Wattley 6-2, 7-5.

"We lost focus in a couple of areas tonight but found ways to regain our composure," said Coomer. "Next week we won't have the luxury to lose focus at any given point. We have to make sure that is something that is corrected."

SIUE takes its first road trip of the spring season next Friday. The Cougars travel to Indianapolis, Indiana, for an 11:30 a.m. CT match at IUPUI.
