EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – SIUE men's tennis won the doubles point Friday but couldn't match the results in singles, taking a 6-1 loss to Tennessee Tech at the Edwardsville Y.
"We came out in doubles today and played extremely well. All three of our doubles team really performed well and should take that confidence into the match tomorrow," said SIUE Head Coach Jason Coomer.
The Cougars will celebrate Senior Day Saturday with a 2:30 p.m. match against Jacksonville State at the Edwardsville Y. The match was moved indoors due to weather conditions.
"Our team never quits and will continue to fight when they take the court tomorrow. Tomorrow should be a good match. We want to send our seniors out with a win at their final home match, and I know they can't wait to get out on the court again," said Coomer.
SIUE was victorious Friday at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles. Patrick Gaffigan and Tristan Houle downed Alberto Esteban and Eduardo Mena 6-4. Jack Desse and Matthew Hutchinson dispatched Alvaro Cintas and Marcos Bernardes 6-2.
Tennessee Tech won all six singles matches in straight sets. Gaffigan took Guillermo Nicolas to a tiebreaker in the second set at No. 3 singles, dropping a 6-2, 7-6 (11-9) decision,
