Belmont Outlasts Cougars 4-3

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. - Belmont won a pair of three-set matches late to edge SIUE men's tennis 4-3 at the Edwardsville Y.

The match was moved indoors due to heavy winds in Edwardsville. The event turned out to be a nail-biter for both teams.

"This is one of those matches where you still are sitting here thinking how it got away from you," said SIUE Head Coach Jason Coomer. "You have to give Belmont credit. They never quit. They fought until the very end, even when they were down 3-2 and behind by a set on the last two courts."

Belmont grabbed the early lead with the doubles point. Cedric Dujacquier and Robin Demasse edged Jack Desse and Matthew Hutchinson at No. 1 singles. Bruno Russo and Adam Rudowski defeated Dan Linebery and Nico Kuehn.

Patrick Gaffigan, Nico Kuehn and Lineberry won their respective singles matches for the Cougars. All three wins were in straights sets.

Belmont's Dujacquier came from behind to defeat Hutchinson 4-6, 7-5, 6-0 at No. 1 singles. Bruno Russo captured the final point of the match at No. 6 singles with a 2-6, 6-2, 6-3 win over Jack Desse.

SIUE's homestand continues next weekend with a pair of OVC matches. The Cougars face Tennessee Tech in a 2 p.m. Friday followed by a 10 a.m. contest Saturday against Jacksonville State.
