Cougars Fight for Draw with Bears

Box Score

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – Following a 30-minute weather delay, playing without its regular goalkeeper, without one its senior defensive leaders for much of the match, and playing with just 10 players for the game's final 40 minutes, SIUE women's soccer fought Missouri State to a 1-1 double overtime tie Friday at Allison South Stadium.

SIUE is now 2-4-2. Missouri State also is 2-4-2.

"For the full game, this was the hardest-working and most committed I've seen our group," SIUE Head Coach Derek Burton said. "That is encouraging going into Ohio Valley Conference play."

Ashley Coonfield opened the scoring for the Bears in the 21st minute of play. She was able to get free on the right side of the box and then scored, beating SIUE goalkeeper Peyton Roehnelt far post from seven yards away.

Roehnelt started in goal because both of the Cougars' goalkeepers are battling injuries.

The Bears carried the 1-0 lead into halftime.

Things got considerably more interesting for the Cougars in the second half.  In the 57th minute, Caroline Hoefert just missed tying the game when her header sailed just over the goal after a corner kick.

In the 54th minute, senior defender Kassidy Rawdon was forced to leave after an errant clearance hit her in the face.

The Cougars nearly tied it again in the 62nd minute when a Sydney Moore header right on goal was saved by Missouri State goalkeeper Evan Stamp.

The equalizer came for the Cougars in the 63rd minute after a free kick from Jorie Claswson from 25 yards found Hoefert in the middle of the box. This time Hoefert found a spot inside the near post for her fifth goal of the year.

"Caroline Hoefert was all over the place," Burton said. "She had an outstanding game."

Just five minutes later, Roehnelt found herself too far out of goal, when Missouri State's Brooke Prondzinski broke free. Roehnelt chased her down grabbed her just outside of the box receiving a red card for the offense. Sophomore defender Sarah Olson took over in goal and was immediately tested. Rachel Catrele hit the ensuing free kick right on goal, which Olson kicked away.

With just 11:27 left in regulation, Courtney Benning appeared to put SIUE on top after she emerged from a tangle in the 18-yard box. Instead, the goal was disallowed and Benning was called for a foul after the tie up with Ashley Tallerine.

SIUE held an 11-10 edge in total shots for the game. Olson made another kick save in the second overtime period and did not allow a goal.

"We faced a bunch of different tests tonight," Burton said. "I am extremely proud. The energy from the whole group was fantastic and the work rate was outstanding."
