After starting out the season with five straight wins and rolling out a new coach with a strong national ranking, Sunday was all but bitter for the Southern Illinois University Edwardsville women's soccer team.
         Top-seeded Northern Kentucky, 15-2-2, showed no mercy in the quarterfinals of the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament with a 3-0 victory in Wilder, Ky. The game ended SIUE's season with a 10-7 record under rookie head coach Lynda Bowers.
         NKU did not score in the first half but got on the scoreboard at 59:41 as Amy Law scored from 20 yards out on an assist from Kendra Zinser.
         The Norse were relentless on offense, outshooting the Cougars 16-1. SIUE's lone shot came from Angela Light. But the Cougar defense and goalkeeper Kristen Covalt were able to hold off the Norse attack until almost the end ad Laurel Chalk scored at 83:21 and Samantha Riley finished the scoring at 88:06.
