Cougars Top USD in Home Opener

         Southern Illinois University Edwardsville scored four unanswered goals to top the visiting South Dakota Coyotes by the score of 4-3 Friday night in a soggy game at Korte Stadium. It was the home opener for the Cougars and new head coach Lynda Bowers.
         Things looked dismal for the Cougars after South Dakota scored three goals in the first half. Teri Atkinson, Lindsey Sturm and Tina Bonacci all scored to give the Coyotes a 3-0 lead.
         Cristen Carducci got the Cougars on the board at 30:22 on a goal assisted by Ann Crawford. One minute and 16 seconds later, Becky Baker scored on a Carducci assist to make it 3-2.
         Kristine Armstrong scored the first goal of her collegiate career at 63:33 to tie the game at 3-3. At 69:00, Carducci, off a corner kick, knocked in her second goal of the game to lift the Cougars to a 4-3 victory.
         SIUE recorded 19 shots to South Dakota's 15. Kristin Covalt shutout the Coyotes in the second half, making two saves.
         SIUE, now 1-0 on the year, will face Ashland Sunday at 1 p.m. at Korte Stadium.
