QUINCY -- Jessica Bretana scored just 1:06 into the first overtime period as Southern Illinois University Edwardsville shocked No. 6-ranked and previously undefeated Quincy 2-1 Wednesday night.
Bretana scored from five yards out on a crossing pass from Elizabeth Valenti, who also recorded the assist on SIUE's first goal of the night.
The Cougars strengthened their record to 8-4-2 overall and 6-3-2 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. Quincy was given the first blemish to its record of 13-1 and 10-1 in the GLVC.
Quincy outshot SIUE 16-10 in the match. It was just the second time all season that SIUE has had fewer shots in a game than its opponent.
SIUE midfielder Kayla Fromme put Quincy on its heels at 27:29 when she connected with a shot from inside the box. Valenti's assist came on a pass from 35 yards out.
Quincy tied the game on a Rachel Poepsel goal from 25 yards out at 41:44.
Both teams were scoreless in the second half, but Bretana's goal sent the Cougars home happy.
SIUE returns home for homecoming weekend. SIUE faces Indianapolis Friday at 5 p.m. and Saint Joseph's at 2:30 p.m. Sunday.
