JOPLIN, Mo. -- It doesn't matter how many shots you take. It just matters whether one went in the goal.
         Southern Illinois University Edwardsville outshot Missouri Southern 25-7 and walked away with a slim 1-0 victory on Saturday.
         Jenny Kates scored teh first goal of the season on an assist from Elizabeth Valenti at 50:39. The two teams battled to a 0-0 tie until halftime, but Kates' goal held off the Lions.
         Kates posted five shots, just one behind Kristine Armstrong's six. The Cougars finished with 11 players who recorded a shot in the game.
         SIUE goalkeeper Kaci Backs collected six saves on Missouri Southern's seven shots, recording the shutout. Kaney Tyler recorded 14 saves for Missouri Southern in the loss.
         The Cougars next face Northeastern State, which lost its season opener 2-1 on Saturday against Missouri-St. Louis. Game time is 11 a.m.
