Thomas, Cougars Defeat UMSL

         EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. -- Devon Thomas scored with less than two minutes to play in the first half as Southern Illinois University Edwardsville blanked Missouri-St. Louis 1-0 Wednesday night at Korte Stadium.
           In SIUE's only regular season home game of the year due to its reclassification to NCAA Division I status, the Cougars celebrated Senior Night with a victory. SIUE improved its record to 5-4 while the visiting Tritons fell to 3-5-1.
           "Everybody wanted to win for the seniors. They played a more focused game tonight," said SIUE Coach Derek Burton.
           Both the Cougars and the Tritons were members of the same conference for the last several seasons. This season, SIUE is a member of the Ohio Valley Conference while UMSL remains in the Great Lakes Valley Conference.
           SIUE controlled the flow of the game, holding a 25-8 advantage on shots. Kaci Backs posted five saves in goal for the Cougars and recorded her third shutout of the season. UMSL goalkeeper Hanna Sayre was kept much busier with 12 saves.
           Thomas' shot came at 43:32 on a pass from Correen Roark. Thomas put it away from about six yards out.
           SIUE will play an exhibition game Saturday against the Alumni team. The Cougars' next regular season action is back on the road at Loyola on Oct. 10.
