ST. LOUIS, Mo. - Southern Illinois University Edwardsville received a jolt off its bench Tuesday night in a 4-0 rout over Missouri-St. Louis in women's college soccer action at Don Dallas Field.
The Cougars improved to 2-8-2 with the victory. SIUE Coach Derek Burton said much of the credit had to go to the players who came off the bench and sparked the offense.
"We had players come off the bench and elevated our game," said Burton.
Kiara Akpore, a starter for the Cougars, opened the scoring as she picked up her first goal of the season at 27:41 unassisted.
A trio of freshmen provided the action for goal No. 2 at 38:54. Kristin Dierker scored from a top of the box with a pair of assists from Megan LeBaron and Kristen Dailey.
Sophomore Rachel Brcic added another goal 45 seconds later from Dierker as the Cougars led 3-0 at halftime.
Dailey added an insurance goal in the second half during the 79th minute.
SIUE's Stephanie Jung and Sarah Schuchard combined for the shutout. Jung made one save as SIUE's offense outshot UMSL 14-4.
Burton noted the back line of Jenny Humphrey, Kelley Humphrey, Sade Akpore, and Jennifer Tucker kept the goalkeepers without much business for the match.
"We settled in and played attacking soccer and got a lot of chances from it," said Burton.
SIUE returns home Sunday to take on Missouri State. The first kick is set for 1 p.m. at Korte Stadium.
