EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. - SIUE women's soccer opened the2009 exhibition season with a 2-1 victory Saturday over Southern Indiana, dominating the flow of play.
Southern Illinois University Edwardsville outshot Southern Indiana 20-3 in what was a modified game. The two teams played three periods of 30 minutes each since both teams only opened training camp earlier this week.
Freshman Kristen Dailey opened the scoring for the Cougars at 23:55, scoring from 10 yards out on the right side. Devon Thomas provided the pass to Dailey.
The Cougars took a 2-0 lead in the second period when sisters Kiara Akpore and Sade Akpore hooked up on a restart. Sade Akpore served it to the middle off the head of Kiara Akpore. The ball didn't look like a goal at first but was ruled one when USI goalkeeper Meagan Kempf's backward momentum moved the ball into the goal.
USI scored its only goal with the help of the Cougars at 59:58, an own goal.
Kiara Akpore led the team in shots with five followed by four from Brittany Bodziak and three from Dailey. Eleven different players recorded shots for the Cougars.
"We played about where I expected us to be in the first exhibition," said SIUE Coach Derek Burton.
SIUE returns to practice early next week but has another home test Tuesday at 5 p.m. The Cougars entertain Arkansas State.
