EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. -- That's soccer.
Northern Illinois scored with 40 seconds left in the first overtime period for a 1-0 victory over Southern Illinois University Edwardsville in women's college soccer.
"It's disappointing to end like that at home," said SIUE coach Derek Burton.
NIU's Kim Schmitt broke the deadlock at 99:20 when she punched the ball in from five yards out past SIUE goalkeeper Claire Lovercheck, who posted three saves for the game. Kelly Mullany and Annie Wyer were credited with assists.
SIUE, which fell to 0-3 with the overtime loss, paced the play in the second half. "We forced them to change. They had to play our game in the second half. SIUE outshot NIU 8-2 in the second half and 11-7 overall.
Kristen Dailey led SIUE with three shots. Chelsey Johnston, Kaci Harkey and Devon Thomas each added two. SIUE outshot Northern Illinois 11-7.
The Cougars next head to Ball State for a 1 p.m. matchup Sunday in Muncie, Ind.
