CHARLESTON, Ill. - Kayla Brown solidified herself as one of the school's best distance runners ever with another school record Saturday at the Illinois Intercollegiates on the campus of Eastern Illinois.
The Southern Illinois University Edwardsville senior broke her own 5,000-meter record with a winning time of 17:29.32. That topped her best performance from last season in the event by nearly 15 seconds.
SIUE battled with Illinois and Eastern Illinois at the meet. Illinois edged out Eastern Illinois 137-132 for the event title. SIUE took third with 71 points.
SIUE Interim Head Coach Kareem Jackson was pleased with SIUE's performance. Along with the school record, there were 11 personal records set by the women's and men's teams at the meet.
Heather Hackel placed fifth in the 5,000-meter race in 20:50.98, a personal best.
Aftan Noon took third in the mile at 5:08.99, surpassing her previous best by four seconds. She also missed the school record in the 1,000-meter run by two seconds, running the event in season best 3:00.82.
SIUE took four of the top six spots in the weight throw. Kristin Wykoff, who finished fourth overall, tossed a career best 47-7. Jennie Satterlee placed second with a throw of 52-10.75. Breanna Branson was third at 49-3.5 and Colleen McDonough was sixth at 46-10.75.
Valery Taylor turned in her career best in the long jump with a third-place finish at 18 feet, 2. 5 inches. She was a mere half-inch behind the first and second place finishers in the event.
Freshman Rachel Roustio turned in a season best in the 3,000 meters. She took fifth place in 11:30.35.
Kaya Senaya placed eighth with a 7.89 in the 60-meter finals.
Megan Dennis finished second in the triple jump at 38-4.25.
