CONWAY, S.C. - It's only day one of the Southern Illinois University Edwardsville outdoor track and field season, and success has already found the Cougars.

Kayla Brown took on the 10,000-meter run for first time in her career and overpowered the field of 18 runners at the Coastal Carolina Invitational. She turned in a time of 36 minutes, 25 seconds, which is the second-fastest outdoor 10,000 in school history. Karin Beach-Pond holds the school record at 36:00, set in 1995.

Ben Bishop started the outdoor season right where he left off the indoor season. He broke the school record in the hammer throw with a toss of 201 feet, 8.5 inches. Bishop placed third at the meet in a field of 46 throwers. The previous hammer record was 191-6 set by SIUE Assistant Coach Scott Block.

Freshman Kaleb Henry took third place in his first collegiate javelin throw event. He threw 204-5, which is third on the all-time SIUE list.

Four Cougars competed in the women's hammer throw. Breanna Branson turned in SIUE's top performance with a throw of 152 feet, 3 inches. Colleen McDonough was 13th at 135-10 followed by Jennie Satterlee in 26th and Kristin Wykoff in 29th.

Mallory Dreyer took 15th place in the javelin throw. Her toss of 106-9 won her flight.

Marc Amarillas and Shawn Dillard competed in the 3,000-meter run. Amarillas just missed the nine-minute barrier in finishing 12th. Dillard took 16th in 9:13.47.

Aaron Werths turned in a top 10 performance with a ninth-place finish at 10,000 meters. He ran the event in 34:01.50. Sean Gosewisch took 13th in the event.

SIUE also ran the men's and women's 800-meter relay events on day one of the meet. The Cougar men finished fourth in 1:28.54 while the women took eighth in 1:45.04.
