CHARLESTON, Ill. Senior distance runner Kayla Brown broke her own school record at 5,000 meters with a winning time at the EIU Invitational Saturday.

Brown turned in a time of 17 minutes, 21.96 seconds. That topped her previous best by nearly nine seconds set last season.

SIUE finished fourth among the five teams. Team scores were totaled in dual-meet style. The Cougars defeated Loyola 91-49. Eastern Illinois was the overall champion with wins over Indiana, Loyola, SIUE and UW-Milwaukee.

SIUE finished the meet with three individual champions.

Aftan Noon won the 1,500-meter run in 4:43.76, edging her nearest competitor Olivia Klaus, of Eastern Illinois, by less than a second. Noon also took third at 800 meters in 2:15.27. Both times were significant improvements over the season-opening meet at Coastal Carolina.

Kaya Senaya was victorious at the 100-meter dash in 12.00, improving her season-best time by nearly one-quarter of a second. She also placed second at 200 meters and improved her season best to 24.90.

Mallory Dreyer was the runner-up in the javelin with a throw of 115-4. She was outdistanced by UW-Milwaukee's Jenni Parish, who threw 120-3.

Valery Taylor finished third in the long jump with a season-best leap of 5.53 meters (18 feet, 1.75 inches). That's a foot better than her previous best this season.

Megan Dennis took third in the triple jump with a leap of 11.83 (38-9.75).

SIUE's depth was strong in the throws as the Cougars took third and fourth place in the discus and the hammer throw as well as fourth, fifth and sixth in the shot put. The Cougar foursome of Kristin Wykoff, Jennie Satterlee, Breanna Branson and Colleen McDonough were among the top 11 in each event.
