CONWAY, S.C. - The outdoor track and field season started with a bang as Southern Illinois University Edwardsville's women's 3,200-meter relay team set a school record at the Coastal Carolina Invitational Friday.

The team of freshmen Renee Goodenough, Megan Petty, Dede Lofton, and sophomore Elisha Crawley broke the SIUE record with an event-winning time of 9 minutes, 32.33 seconds. The Cougars finished nearly seven seconds ahead of the closest competitors.

"I have been very pleased with the practices this week," said SIUE Head Coach Kareem Jackson. "We have been able to get in some quality work, and the team has remained focused and ready to compete."

Sophomore Colleen McDonough placed third in the hammer throw with a toss of 146 feet, 5 inches, while junior Kristin Wykoff earned an eighth-place finish with a throw of 142-3.

On the men's side, the sophomore duo of Aaron Werths and Campbell Walters placed first and third, respectively in their heat of the 3,000-meter run.

Werths led the heat from start to finish and placed 10th overall in a time of 9 minutes, 32:02, while Walters finished 13th crossing the finish line in 9:06.51.

"Our women made history today, and we will look to continue the momentum tomorrow," added Jackson.

Day two of the Coastal Carolina Invitational will start early Saturday morning.
