OXFORD, Miss. - Jatavia Wright wasted little time putting her stamp on the record books for the SIUE women's track and field team in the outdoor opener Saturday at the Ole Miss Invitational.
The freshman got her first taste of outdoor competition with a record-breaking performance in the 100 hurdles finishing third in 14.16 seconds. Wright passed Deserea Brown's mark of 14.20 set back in 2008.
Wright's time also qualified her for the USA Junior Outdoor Track & Field Championships, which will be held June 15-17 at the University of Indiana.
Ioana Citireag's success from the indoor season carried outside in a big way as she won the 800 meters in a time of 2 minutes 12.91 seconds, which ranks third all-time at SIUE.
Dede Lofton finished behind Citireag in eighth in a time of 2:15.83.
Hilary Conrad turned in another top-10 finish for the Cougars placing 10th overall in the 400 meters with a time of 56.84.
Claire Brown recorded the third-fastest time in SIUE history in the 3,000 steeplechase finishing 14th in 12:09.55.
Elizabeth Hampl matched Colleen McDonough's third-best SIUE mark of 161 feet from a year ago in the hammer earning 14th place.
Kristin Wykoff finished ninth in the discus with a toss of 138-10.
The Cougars continue the outdoor season April 7 at the Joey Haines Invitational in Cape Girardeau, Mo.
