CHICAGO – Erin DiGiovanni netted the lone goal in a 1-0 SIUE victory on the road Saturday at Loyola, in the team's only exhibition match of the season.
"It's great to get a positive start after all the hard work our group has put in so far this preseason," SIUE Head Coach Derek Burton said. "Individually we battled hard, but I was impressed with our understanding of how we wanted to play."
The winning tally came in the 16th minute. Michelle Auer hit the crossbar with a shot before DiGiovanni headed in the rebound. Auer was credited with an assist on the goal.
Courtney Vonder Haar started the game in goal for the Cougars, making one save during the first half. Freshman Jennifer Pelley played the second half and made three saves.
The Cougars open the regular season Friday night at Indiana State. Kickoff is slated for 6 p.m. CT.
