PREVIEW: Track Travels to Carbondale Friday

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – After opening the outdoor season at home last weekend, the SIUE men's and women's track and field teams will head to SIU Carbondale this weekend for the Bill Cornell Spring Classic.

Competition will begin at 3 p.m. Friday before resuming at 9 a.m. Saturday at the Salukis' Lew Hartzog Track Complex.

"This will be a good opportunity for us," Head Coach Kareem Jackson said.  "It's a heated rivalry anytime we get to compete against Carbondale, and there's going to be great competition in all event areas.  We're excited about getting there and seeing our kids compete."

The Cougars kicked off outdoor competition last weekend at the Cougar Classic at Korte Stadium, and saw several school records fall.

On the women's side, Elizabeth Hampl set a new school record in the hammer throw with a toss of 184 feet, 10 inches, breaking the previous mark of 181-4 set by Carrie Glover in 2006.

Jatavia Wright also rewrote the record book, breaking her own school record in the long jump with a leap of 19-4.25.

For the men, Ahmad Evans set a new program best in the 200 meters with a time of 21.17 seconds, while Darius Smith broke the school record in the 100 meters with a finish of 10.54.

Other Ohio Valley Conference schools competing in this weekend's meet include Murray State, Eastern Illinois, and Southeast Missouri.
