PREVIEW: Track Hosts Gateway Classic Saturday

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – The SIUE men's and women's track and field teams will compete in their final meet before Ohio Valley Conference Championships when they host the Gateway Classic at Korte Stadium Saturday.

The meet is scheduled to begin with field events at 2:30 p.m.  Track events are set to begin at 3 p.m.

"With this being our last meet before OVC Championships, we're excited that we get a chance to have this meet at home," Head Coach Kareem Jackson said.  "We have a lot of our athletes back healthy and ready to compete.  We're looking forward to the competition that's coming in and performing at a high level."

Also competing in Saturday's meet will be Wisconsin, Western Illinois, Chicago State, and Milwaukee.

Last weekend at Western Kentucky, SIUE saw one record fall on the men's side along with three on the women's side.

Sophomore Ahmad Evans set the new school record in the men's 100 meters with a finish of 10.41.  The Chicago native was named OVC Male Track Athlete of the Week for his performance.

For the women, senior Aftan Noon also earned OVC Athlete of the Week honors following a performance at WKU that included two first-place finishes.  Noon broke her own school record in the 1,500 meters (4:26.43) while also placing first in the 800 meters (2:09.97).

Colleen McDonough broke the school record in the shot put with a throw of 48 feet, 7.25 inches while Jatavia Wright set a new program best in the 100-meter hurdles (13.95).

Regionally, SIUE is currently ranked 21st on the men's side and 20th on the women's side according to the U.S. Track & Field Coaches Association.
