PREVIEW: Track & Field Travels to SEMO

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – The SIUE men's and women's track and field teams will hit the road this weekend as they travel to compete in the Billy Haines Invitational at Southeast Missouri State.

The hammer throw will take place at 3:30 p.m. Friday, while all other events will begin at 11:00 a.m. Saturday.  All competition will be held at SEMO's Abe Stuber Track & Field Complex.

The Cougars were in action last weekend at the Bill Cornell Spring Classic in Carbondale, Ill.  The SIUE women took fourth out of 14 teams with 74 points.

"Our women's team is really starting to get the ball rolling," Head Coach Kareem Jackson said.  "They've had strong meets in back-to-back weeks, and you can see the team chemistry growing."

Leading the way on the women's side was senior thrower Colleen McDonough, who broke the program record in the shot put with a mark of 48 feet, 4.5 inches.  The throw broke the previous school record of 46-8.75 set by Holly Noller in 2006.

The SIUE men placed eighth out of 12 teams with 34 points in Carbondale.

Sophomore Braxton Klavins took home first place honors in the 400 meters with a time of 47.42 seconds.  The finish was an outdoor best for Klavins, who came out on top in a crowded field of 21 competitors.

"I'm looking for our men's team to improve from last week's performance," Jackson added.  "As a team, we weren't at the level that we're capable of.  We're hoping to see a big improvement from everybody."
