Cougars Undefeated Streak Extends to Eight

Box Score

FARGO, N.D. – Despite a season-high nine shots on goal, SIUE women's soccer was unable to find the back of the net. SIUE and Colorado State played to a scoreless draw in double overtime Sunday in the second game for both teams at the Doublewood Inn Classic.

The tie extended SIUE's unbeaten streak to eight games. The Cougars are now 6-1-2 and have not suffered a defeat since the season's first game. Colorado State is 1-4-3 for the season.

SIUE Head Coach Derek Burton said the teams had to fight a 25-30 mph cross wind.

"Conditions were not ideal. It was an ugly game for stretches," Burton said. "There were other stretches where we played like we wanted to. We felt like we had the best of the game, and we're disappointed to not be walking off with a win whether it be in regulation or in overtime."

Sarah Doggendorf led the offensive attack for the Cougars. Doggendorf unloaded a season-high five shots, including two on goal. Cassidy Sherman finished with three shots. She also put two on goal. Kayla Delgado and Erin DiGiovanni had two shots apiece.

Hope Jones nearly ended the game in the Cougars favor when she hit the cross bar with a shot in the first minute of overtime.

Burton said the team needed to have more of a similar idea of what they were going to do in the offensive end of the field.

"The story of today is a lack of connectivity in the final third," he said. "It is something that we are working on and we will continue to work on.

Rams' goalkeeper Maggie Sherman made nine saves to earn the shutout.

The Cougars' defense limited Colorado State to just three shots. Jennifer Pelley made three saves and earned her fifth shutout of the season. The sophomore now has 14 for her SIUE career which is fourth most in school history.

SIUE return home to open Ohio Valley Conference play. The Cougars play host to Tennessee Tech Friday at 7 p.m.

"We need to get back and recover," Burton said. "We're looking forward to getting conference play started next weekend."
