Track Kicks Off Outdoor Season

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – The SIUE track and field program competed in its first outdoor meet of the 2014 season Saturday afternoon, as the Cougars welcomed six teams to Korte Stadium for the Cougar Classic.

As a team, the Cougars finished second on the men's side with 112 points while the SIUE women finished third with 83 points.

"Our team competed well today," Interim Head Coach Eileen McAllister said.  "Conditions weren't ideal but we showed good effort."

On the men's side, Braxton Klavins took home first place in the 100 meters (10.42 seconds), 200 meters (21.59).  He also ran the anchor leg of the men's 4x100 meter relay, chasing down the field to give the Cougars a first place finish at 41.62.

"Braxton had a great day of wins," McAllister said.  "He was only .01 seconds off the school record in the 100 meters."

La'Derrick Ward, who competed at NCAA Indoor National Championships last weekend, won the men's long jump with a leap of 23-7.5 while Mladen Hristov earned first in the triple jump at 43-11.75.

In the throws, Jamil Mashni set a personal best in the discus with a throw of 159-3.

On the women's side, Hilary Conrad finished first in the 200 meters with a time of 24.89 and set a personal best in the 100 meters at 12.29.

Conrad was also the anchor of the women's 4x400 meter relay team that finished first in a time of 3:59.96.

In the field events, Elizabeth Hampl won the women's hammer throw with a toss of 183-2.

"I definitely want to thank all of our facilities and event staff, officials, and the coaching staff," McAllister added.  "They did a terrific job.  It's not easy to host a track meet.  We have an outstanding facility and we love to showcase it."

The Cougars will be back in action next weekend when they travel to Memphis for the Tigers Spring Opener on Saturday.
