GAINESVILLE, Fla. – SIUE broke a school record for the second straight day at the Florida Relays.
Elizabeth Hampl, a junior from Troy, Ill., shattered the school record in the hammer throw with a toss of 196 feet, 2 inches. Her fifth throw of the meet bested the old record set by Colleen McDonough (187-9 in 2013).
"Hampl's throw was huge," said SIUE Interim Head Coach Eileen McAllister. "We have been waiting on it based on her showing at practice."
Hampl finished fourth among of a group of the nation's top collegiate throwers.
"This was another good day at the Florida Relays," said McAllister.
The Cougars' Jatavia Wright, a junior from Miami Gardens, Fla., also set a personal best in the triple jump with a leap of 40-11.5. She took 12th in a field of 30 competitors.
"It was a successful trip," said McAllister. "We wanted to take advantage of the weather and competition to get marks for the NCAA first round. We accomplished that. We also wanted to expose our athletes to national-level competition and gain national exposure for SIUE."
