ELSAH, Ill. – Travis Kidd, La'Derrick Ward, and LaDonna Caston repeated as champions in the SIUE track and field loss to Southeast Missouri State in the Gateway Dual Meet.
The men's team finished with 68 points to the Redhawks' 89. The women's team compiled 65.5 points while Southeast Missouri finished with 89.5.
"It wasn't the team results we wanted, but we had some very good performances and positive growth," said SIUE Head Coach Eileen McAllister. "There were several breakthroughs from some athletes which is important."
Ward won in the long jump for the second consecutive meet. His mark of 25 feet, 0.75 inches is currently eighth nationally.
Kidd won the high jump for the second year in a row. The 6-8 jump was a personal best for Kidd.
McAllister also noted a solid performance from Ahmad Evans. Evans finished in first place in both the 200-meter race (22.19 seconds) and the 400-meter race (49.75).
"The contribution from the multiple event champions or event champions is huge for us," said McAllister.
On the women's side, LaDonna Caston won the 60-meter hurdles for the second meet in a row with a time of 8.78. Caston also finished in the first place at 60 meters race (7.70).
Cougar freshman Brittney Gibbs won the triple jump for her first collegiate win with a mark of 40-4.
The Cougars' 4x400 relay team also finished in first place with a time of 4:03.52. The team is made up of Caston, Brittany Thomas, LaCresha Linton, and Jasmine Johnson.
"The women's 4x400 relay really demonstrated what we need to do," said McAllister. "They weren't favored, and we didn't perform well in the open 400 meter race. They could have given up before it started, but they fought until the end and made something happen."
The Cougars will compete in the Prin Relays in Elsah, Illinois, Jan. 30 at 1 p.m.
