Caston, Klavins Lead Cougars at Prin Relays

ELSAH, Ill. – LaDonna Caston and Braxton Klavins each won multiple events in the Cougar's domination of the Prin Relays.

"We expect the same effort and intensity at all meets but they were able to see how they can get in their own way at times by trying to force a win or a certain mark," said Head Coach Eileen McAllister. "We want them to compete in the moment and the rest will take care of itself."

Caston won three events and led the team in points, including the 60 meter hurdles, the 60 meter dash, and the 300 meter run. She finished just shy of career-bests in the 60 meter hurdles (8.54 seconds) and 60 meter dash (7.69), while competing in the 300 meter run for the first time.

This is the third consecutive meet in which Caston has won the 60 meter hurdles event, and the second meet in a row that Caston has won both the 60 meter hurdles and the 60 meter dash.

Klavins, competing in his second meet this season, won and set the SIUE records in both the 60 meter dash (6.85) and the 500 meter dash (1:05.22). It was the first time this season that Klavins has won the 60 meter dash, and his first time competing in the 500 meter dash.

Along with Caston and Klavins, four other Cougars won their events.

Elizabeth Hampl won the shot put with a mark of 44 feet, 0.25 inches, just shy of her personal best. Hampl also placed second in the weight throw with a throw of 58-0.75.

Outside of Klavins, three other Cougars won events for the men. Bobby Kaluza won the 60 meter hurdles in a time of 8.58.

Greg Block won the weight throw event and moved to No. 3 all-time, setting a personal best 61-10.5.

Freshman Ben Scamihorn won his first collegiate event in the mile. His time of 4:25.33 was a personal best by almost five seconds.

Outside of Scamihorn, Keith Meyer (4:27.23), Nick Moore (4:31.01), and Anthony Holshouser (4:34.27) all recorded a new career best in the mile.

Erin Kennedy on the women's side also had a career-best mile, running the race in 5:28.50. Kennedy has set a personal record in each meet so far this season.

McAllister also noted the solid performance of Davinn Smith, setting a new personal best in the 60 meter dash with a time of 6.96.

"It was a long meet and most of the team had several events," said McAllister. "It was good practice for them to remain focused and take care of business between events like they will need to do at the Ohio Valley Conference Championships."

The Cougars will compete in the Notre Dame Meyo Invitational in South Bend, Indiana Feb. 6-7.
