Cougars Complete Day One at Arkansas State

JONESBORO, Ark. – SIUE track and field athletes competed well in the first day of the Red Wolves Open.

Despite the rain and cold weather, six Cougars set personal bests during the day.

"The team competed well," said Head Coach Eileen McAllister. "We don't allow weather to be an excuse. We expect them to compete at the same level regardless of circumstances."

Five of the Cougars' personal bests came from the distance runners, including a first place finish in the 5K from Luke Padesky with a time of 14 minutes, 56.76 seconds, bettering his last year time by 19 seconds.

Erin Kennedy continues to bury her previous race times. She placed second in the 5k and finished the race in 18:05.76. That is a 1:44 improvement from last year and 17 second improvement from indoor season.

Scott Woodard also ran a personal best in the 5k 15:42.24.

Ben Scamihorn finished fourth in the 3K steeplechase. The freshman set a new personal best by 26 seconds at 9:42.31.

Fellow freshman Haley Miller also set a personal best in the steeplechase by 12 seconds running it in 11:50.33 and finishing fifth.

"I was happy with the execution of strategy by the distance runners," said McAllister. "All of them made progress and I just can't say enough about Erin's mammoth drops in time."

Mladen Hristov set a personal best for the third weekend in a row, this time in the long jump with a mark of 20-8.75 and placing eighth.

The Cougars continue competition Saturday at the Red Wolves Open beginning with the shot put and discus at 10:30 a.m. Elizabeth Hampl and Greg Block will compete at the Drake Relays in the hammer throw at 9 a.m.
