Box Score CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – The SIUE women's soccer team fell to Illinois 5-0 Sunday, in the first meeting between the two teams since 1982.
The Cougars drop to 1-4 overall. The Fighting Illini (4-2) also have wins over #3 Duke and #14 Oklahoma State this season.
"We had some very enouraging performances," SIUE Head Coach Derek Burton said. "Katie Mahoney and Lydia Harris were very good today. We had three or four good chances that would have made the game quite different."
Illinois got off to a quick start, scoring within the first minute of play with a goal from Makena Silber. Kelly Maday was credited with the assist for Illinois.
In the 19th minute, Katie Murray scored her third goal of the season for the Fighting Illini with a rebound off the post from her own shot.
Illinois scored its third goal of the half with a Caroline Ratz goal in the 39th minute.
The Fighting Illini outshot the Cougars 8-1 in the first half, five of the shots being on goal.
Maday scored Illinois' fourth goal of the game in the 57th minute. Murray then scored her second goal of the game and fourth this season to seal the win for Illinois.
"We aren't yet there with our consistency in terms of recognition and application of responsibilities," added Burton. "A good team like Illinois will punish you for it."
SIUE's Courtney Benning, Kayla Klipsch, Allison Wendt and Ashlin West each recorded a shot on target. Goalkeeper Jensen Schoch made four saves on the day.
Illinois outshot SIUE 12-4 during full time.
"We will keep working with our heads up knowing we have a team that can get us to where we want to be," Burton said. "And we will get there."
The Cougars will be back in action Friday at 7 p.m. when they travel to face Missouri State.
