Cougars Track & Field Travels to Iowa City, IA

The Cougar Track and Field teams travel to Iowa City, IA to compete in the Hawkeye Invitational, January 10th and 11th.  The Cougars will be competing against Iowa, Iowa Central, Northern Illinois, Northern Iowa, Western Illinois, Hawkeye CC, and Indian Hills CC.

"The meet at Iowa this weekend will present a lot of good opportunities for us," said SIUE assistant track coach Doug McDannald.  The Hawkeye indoor track inside the University of Iowa Recreation Building reopened in 2016 with a multi-million dollar makeover. The new raised track sits up to five feet off the ground and is a one-of-a-kind competition surface previously used for the 2016 World Championships in Eugene, Oregon.  "The OVC Championships will also be held on a 200m banked track, we feel like it is greatly beneficial for our athletes to get a feel for running on the banked surface prior to the championships."

The Cougar men's team enters the competition with six athletes ranked in the top 40 of their events.  "It should be an exciting meet," continued McDannald. "Typically, the higher the level of the competition, the better our athletes perform."

The Hawkeye Invitational will kick off at 2:00pm CT with the women's weight throw followed by the men's weight throw.  Saturday events will begin at 10:00am CT with the high jump.  Track events will start at 12:15pm CT with the 60m hurdles preliminaries.  All events will start with men followed by women.
