5th Annual Gorilla Indoor Classic Results
Pittsburg, Kan. - The SIUE men's and women's track and field teams headed west to compete in the 5th Annual Gorilla Indoor Classic at the Robert W. Plaster Center/Harvey Dean Track on the Pittsburg State campus. The 5th Annual Gorilla Indoor Classic featured over 65 teams and provided a bounty of PRs, season bests, and new school records for SIUE.
Alexis Hutchins set a new school record in the weight throw with a distance of 59' 6.75". Hutchins previous best was 56' 8.75" set at the Illini Invitational earlier this season. Hutchins' performance bested the old SIUE school record of 58' 5.25", set by Lizzie Virgl in 2018.
Nick Matthews placed second in the weight throw on the men's side with a new PR of 65' 6". Matthews' previous best throw this season was 65' 3.25" at the SEMO dual.
A different type of school record was set by Joe Stone and Kevin Campbell in the first 600 yard ever run by a Cougar. Stone completed his run with a 1:13.04 time and Cambell ran 1:13.90. These times were good for 9th and 14th place in a competitive field.
Lejla Hajderovic continued to finish in the top 10 for the third week in a row in the high jump with a height of 5' 2.5", good for a 6th place finish. Ethan Poston continued his high jump success placing 6th and tying his 2020 indoor season best with a 6' 8.75" jump.
Keri Burmester smashed her previous 3000 meter top time by :08 seconds with a 10:29.26 performance. Burmester's finish was the 8th fastest 3000 meter time run at SIUE. Kassidy Dexheimer ran a season best 3000 meter with a 10:44.49 performance, a :34 second improvement while Liam O'Connell improved his 3000 meter time by :20 seconds with a 9:01.88 finish. The men's 4 x 400 meter team of Collin Brown, Kevin Campbell, Brandon Bretz, and Joseph Stone, ran a new season best of 3:21.42.
The Cougars are working to improve upon their indoor season success next week at the Missouri Collegiate Challenge.
