The 1975 men’s soccer team took SIUE to its first appearance in the NCAA Division I national championship game. The Cougars won three NCAA Tournament games before falling to San Francisco in the national title game. SIUE’s run also featured the Cougars’ first-ever win over rival Saint Louis in the postseason. The team featured All-American Greg Makowski and John Stremlau, both individual SIUE Athletics Hall of Fame recipients. Tim Twellman, also an SIUE Athletics Hall of Famer, was the team’s leading scorer with 12 goals and 11 assists. The rest of the team includes Steve Axmacher, Kavoos Blourtchi, Chris Cacciatore, Steve Cacciatore, Tom Donovan, Dave Fitzler, Jim Forrester, Bob Gallagher, Joe Gallagher, Tony Giamanco, Tom Henson, Brian Higgins, Tim Holstein, Pat Horne, Jerry Howe, Hadley Koeller, Gene Mishalow, Mark Moran, Bob Robson, John Schaeffering, Bill Schnefke, Mike Smallwood, Leo Toedebusch, Greg Villa and John Zacheis. The coaching staff included Guelker and assistant coaches Pat McBride, Rick Benben, and Chris Carenza.
