SIUE's charge to tennis supremacy continued in 1983 at San Marcos, Texas, when the Cougars won a sixth consecutive NCAA Division II team championship for Coach Kent DeMars. SIUE defeated Southwest Texas State 5-4 in the championship match of the tournament. Doug Burke and Joe Vassen would collect the winning point for SIUE at No. 2 doubles, winning a thrilling three-set match. SIUE possessed a stunning lineup of players with Ken Flach at No. 1 singles and Robert Seguso at No. 2 singles. Flach would go on to win his third consecutive NCAA Division II singles title, despite losing the first four games of the final set. He and Seguso captured the NCAA Division II doubles crown. Other key members of the sixth straight national crown were Ernie Mitropoulos, Raimo Ojala, Monty Oppenheim, and Johan Sjogren.
