It would be Hall of Fame Head Coach Bob Guelker's final NCAA Tournament appearance as SIUE bolted to a national semifinalist finish and a 15-4-1 record. Led by goalkeeper Ed Gettemeier who already had played on a national championship team in 1979, the Cougars played the mix of high scoring and a stingy defense. The Cougars finished with nine shutouts, including the Bronze Boot over Saint Louis and two in the NCAA Tournament against North Texas State and San Francisco only to drop the national semifinal to Indiana. Gettemeier completed his senior season as an All-American with a 0.65 goals against average and a record 122 saves. Sixteen different players would score led by 13 goals from Dan O'Keefe. Other members of the national semifinal team were Chris Hundelt, Dave Cappetta, Steve Gauvain, Bill Stallings, Bruce Bellinger, Dan Malloy, Mike Gauvain, Sean Mulqueeny, Tom Groark, Tom Blake, Leo Bourneuf, Tim Loughman, Greg Fleher, Steve Schell, Craig Guempel, Tuaya Chiwanga, Matt Tracy, Mike Twellman and John Becher as well as assistant coach Tom Howe.
