With its fifth straight national team championship, SIUE set a new NCAA record. The five consecutive team titles broke the record for most consecutive national titles in any NCAA division. The old record was four titles when Southern California accomplished it from 1966 to 1969. The Cougars achieved its latest national title with the same type of flair, winning the team title 22-13 over runner-up California State-Bakersfield. Ken Flach repeated as the nation's top singles player and continued his own streak of national tournament singles matches won to 12, defeating teammate Robert Seguso in the finals 6-2, 6-4. Flach added a national title in doubles with teammate Doug Burke. The 1982 men's tennis team, coached by Kent DeMars, featured a deep lineup that included Hugo Nunez, Marc Sluszny, Ray Kuzava, Joe Vassen, Gary Levins, and Glenn Stephan.
