If there is a list of firsts in SIUE wrestling history, Mark Hattendorf is among the leaders. He was the first four-time NCAA Division II All-American in school history; 1976 - 167 pounds (5th), 1977 - 177 pounds (3rd), 1978 - 177 pounds (2nd), 1979 - 177 pounds (1st). After advancing to the NCAA Division II finals in both 1978 and 1979, Hattendorf earned a spot in the NCAA Division I Championships. Once again, Hattendorf set a first for the Cougars. He took advantage of his spot at the Division I Championships with an eighth-place finish and All-American honors in both 1978 and 1979, becoming the first Division I All-American and first to earn All-American honors twice under Head Coach Larry Kristoff.
