SIUE women's tennis traveled to Rohnert Park, California, for the finals in search of a third consecutive national team championship under Coach Bob Meyers, who, ironically, would be honored as the men's tennis national Coach of the Year. Tied 4-4 in the national championship dual match, the No. 2 doubles match was the only action left on the court. SIUE prevailed 5-4 when Michelle Wreen and Sandi Stace toppled Cal Poly-SLO's Vicki Kanter and Susan Norman 6-4, 7-5. SIUE's one-two punch of Christina Bokelund and Portia George cruised through the doubles championship, winning the national title for the second straight season. George advanced to national finals in singles. Bokelund and Wreen, both whom would be named Senior of the Year by the Intercollegiate Tennis Coaches Association (ITCA), earned All-American honors for the Cougars. SIUE's national title team included Jennifer Reuter, Nicki DeMuro, and Leslie Jones.
