A team that featured nine players who would finish their career with 100 or more hits, theĀ 1991 SIUE baseball teamĀ set a high standard of success under Head Coach Gary Collins. The NCAA Division II North Central Region champions went on to place fifth at the NCAA Division II College World Series in Montgomery, Alabama, setting the school record for victories with 43. Catcher Tim Degener was named an All-American after posting a .423 batting average, which stands as the single-season record by a Cougar. Degener was joined on the All-Central Region team by infielder Chris Kabbes, outfielder Tim Hogan, outfielder Jeff Elsing, infielder John Moad, and pitcher Matt King. Eight players were named to the North Central Region All-Tournament team, including Moad as the Most Valuable Player. The 1991 team continues to hold several single-season records, including highest on-base percentage (.430), runs scored (499), doubles (146), walks (287), stolen bases (131-160), wins (43), innings pitched (561.2), and no-hitters (3). The rest of the roster includes Todd Carter, Brian Gonterman, Darin Hendrickson, Kurt Hill, Jamie Hogan, Jeff Huston, Jeff Johnson, Chris Jones, Fred Judge, Stan Lentz, Mike McAfee, Mark Ringering, Al Sage, Randy Stedman, Rich Stierwalt, Tony Stoecklin, and Ed Wayne. The assistant coaches were Joe Silkwood, Doug Fish, Tony Duenas, and Gib Darden.
