SIUE finished the season with a 35-15 record. The Cougars advanced to the NCAA Division II Baseball Championship, falling to Jacksonville State 8-7 in the semifinals. SIUE won the Division II Midwest Regional Championship over Mankato State. As a team, the Cougars finished with a team batting average of .310. George Vogel finished with a team-leading .367 batting average and 46 runs batted in. Tom Greco led the Cougars in home runs with eight. The Cougars' pitching staff had a combined earned run average of 4.29. Jim Scheibal and Scott Schaffer each finished the season with a 7-3 record. Schaffer completed 61.0 innings pitched with an ERA of 5.46 and three complete games. All-American pitcher Ted Smith pitched 71.1 innings with 40 strikeouts and an ERA of 4.29. While Scheibal pitched 56.2 innings and had a 3.17 ERA on the season. Notable wins for SIUE included Missouri, Saint Louis, New Mexico, Eastern Illinois, SIU Carbondale, and Delaware. Other team members included Tim Gamble, Scott Wilkerson, Dan Allaria, Dan Ritzheimer, Terry Cochran, Brian Kabbes, Dave Jones, Jackie Baugher, Kirk Martin, John Gibson, Jim Semanisin, Richard Fletcher, Charlie Hodges, Rick Bertagnolli, Damon Buehrer, Dave Jones, Chaun Wilson, Ted Smith, Kent Taylor, Steve Seevers, Al Yount, Rik Carter, and Dave Gray. The head coach of the Cougars was Gary Collins. His assistant coaches were Dan O'Brien and Ed Kopff.
